Kana Colla

Associate Teacher of Movement

Kana Colla is a dedicated actor, dancer, physical performer, and movement teacher-in-training.

Kana developed a passion for the arts as a teenager performing and teaching in the local musical theater company in her native Sendai, Japan. Her desire to further her education as a performer led Kana to earn a BFA in Dance from California State University, Long Beach. Kana toured internationally as a dancer for over eight years as one of the founding members of Shen Wei Dance Arts in venues such as Lincoln Center, Sydney Opera House, the Barbican London, and Venice Biennale; but it was off-stage as an integral voice in Shen Wei’s creative process where she credits deepening her appreciation and insight into improvisation, choreography, and ensemble. Kana’s physical and movement training extends beyond all dance forms with the exploration and practice of Yoga, Butoh, Gaga, and Alexander technique. She is also a certified Pilates trainer as well as a Reiki practitioner.

Kana has been training as an actor with Terry Knickerbocker since 2008. She has also studied with Nate Flower, Julia Crockett, Maggie Flanigan, Faye Simpson, Ted Morin, Jean-Rene Toussaint, and Per Brahe. Her theater credits include performances at Lincoln Center Theater and New Ohio Theatre. She is passionate about listening to the truths we hold in our bodies and loves growing as a teaching artist by learning from her mentors, colleagues, and students.

“Kana is an inspiring and brave artist. She is thoughtful and willing to push into unfamiliar territory fearlessly. Her movement work is specific, fluid, and beautiful.”
