Advanced Script Analysis will explore the works of four renowned U.S. playwrights: Edward Albee, Sam Shepard, Tony Kushner, and Suzan Lori-Parks. This seminar-style course will involve a collective close read of one play per writer. We’ll spend three to four weeks on each work. The class’s time together will involve rigorous table work (with actual pen and paper in hand!) doing a group action analysis of the plays. The process will also include in-depth discussion of character and themes with an eye toward how this work might find life in performance. Throughout the analyses of the plays, students will be asked to bring in material that they associate with each play–music, images, stories, etc.–so together we can explore our own creative relationship to the work as well as the mechanics of the script.
